What Types of Injuries are Common in Commercial Trucking Accidents?

Serious vehicular accidents can cause a broad array of injuries. In fact, an auto accident can produce an injury of any type or level of severity. Unfortunately in the case of commercial trucking accidents, the injuries are usually more severe than those that would be sustained in a typical accident involving only passenger vehicles. This is chiefly because commercial trucks – vehicles like 18-wheelers, dump trucks, garbage trucks, and Mack trucks – are extremely large vehicles. With all that size comes a great deal of additional mass and weight. Since the amount of force present is a function of mass and acceleration, a greater amount of mass often means the forces involved in the accident will be significantly more violent. And absent superior safety features, a more violent collision typically leads to more serious injuries.

While every accident is unique producing its own array of injuries and consequences, certain types of injuries are more common than others. Injuries commonly sustained in accidents involving large commercial trucks include:

    • Traumatic brain injuries – Traumatic brain injuries (TBI) are injuries that are particularly concerning because damage to the brain can affect all aspects of that individual’s functioning and personality. Depending on where the damage to the brain is located, individuals may experience cognitive deficits including reduced information processing abilities, difficulties with abstract concepts, loss of orientation to time and place and other problems.
    • Neck and back injuries – Neck and back injuries are perhaps the most common complaint following any type of vehicular accident. Whiplash, caused by the shearing of muscle and nerve tissues during a violent crash, is perhaps the most common type of back or neck injury. Injuries of this type can be due to done or spinal injuries, a soft issue injury or because of a herniated or slipped disc.
    • Broken bones – While any fracture to a bone is painful and unwelcome, bone fractures can vary significantly in severity. A fracture can range from a mere chip of the bone to a complex fracture where the bone has broken into many pieces or when the skin and other tissue has been punctured by the severe damage. If full recovery is possible, a complex fracture may take years to fully heal from.
    • Burn injuries – Burn injuries can occur as the result of friction burns, due to electric systems in the vehicle, from chemicals or due to a thermal injury. Regardless of the exact cause of the burn, these types of injuries are extremely painful and can require years of intensive therapy and care.

While the foregoing is not a comprehensive list of all types of injuries possible to be sustained, it does cover those that are more commonly reported following a commercial trucking accident.
